⚜ histoire

Elena Gilbert was born to Isobel Fleming and John Gilbert. Because Isobel wasn't ready to handle motherhood yet, they gave the child to John's brother, Grayson Gilbert to adopt. Elena grew up thinking that Grayson and Miranda were her real parents, and Jeremy as her brother. They treated her just like they would treat Jeremy, so Elena never had any reason to doubt that. In fact, Miranda was the one who got Elena to start a diary in the first place.

One night, Elena snuck out to a party, and when her parents found out, they were furious. It was on their way back that, on Wickery Bridge, they got into a car accident. It was a fortunate coincidence that Stefan had been there.

It's at this point that things diverge from the original timeline.

That night on Wickery Bridge, when Grayson asked Stefan to save Elena first, she was already too far gone. Stefan tried to save her by feeding some of his blood to make sure she didn't die on the way to the emergency ward. Unfortunately, her wounds were too severe for the meagre amount he gave her, out of reluctance to feed a human with vampire blood. But it was enough to bring her back in transition as a vampire, and by the time he realized, she'd already completed the transition by killing the mortician attending her body.

Elena was, understandably, terrified and a mess after the entire incident. In order to avoid attention, Stefan grabbed her and booked it back out of town as fast as he could.

Basically, they spent a year traveling around, with Stefan showing her the ropes of vampirism. Initially, she was reluctant to trust him, but welp, what are you going to do when he's the only vampire around? Or at least, the only vampire she knew and somewhat trusted.

Of course, everything was fine, and since he was such a gentleman saving her ass and all, they started to get closer, and she started confessing things to him like the day of her parents' death and her guilt about it. And then she found his picture of Katherine from 1864 and all went to hell. She wondered if he actually wanted to save her life and become friends for her, or if he was just hoping to have a replacement for Katherine.

Like in the original series, Elena packed up and left, turning off her emotions on the way out because for the entire past year, he'd been the only one she could depend on, and now she doubted his entire motivation behind all of that. She started feeding on people, and found that it sated her hunger in a way that bunnies couldn't. Elena wandered around for a long time before one day she wandered right into Damon Salvatore. She was feeding on some poor schmuck in an alleyway from the bar, and he came out because he caught a glimpse of her.

At first, he mistook her for Katherine. She corrected him right away, throwing in a snide remark about Salvatore brothers and their obsession with Katherine.

"...Katherine?"
"I reeeally can't get a break. It's Elena. Elena Gilbert. Not Katherine. Who are you?"
"...Damon. Salvatore."
"I should've known. Salvatores. You wouldn't happen to be related to Stefan?"
"Ah... my precocious younger brother. Haven't heard from him since... oh, 1980."

And then basically, Elena gets the full story of Katherine from Damon, or at least what he knows.

After that, they started traveling together, and he started showing her the real, non-censored ways of vampirism, including how to feed from people, a la Sage. And/or stealing from blood banks.

Of course, eventually, they head back to Mystic Falls, because Damon still wanted to free Katherine from her tomb prison. Though Elena isn't super gungho about that idea, she was more apathetic to it than anything. She went with him because she wanted to check up on Jeremy.

Incidentally, Stefan is also there, because he thought that's where Elena might've run back to after running off, and he'd just been staying there with Uncle Zach since. Elena is still fairly cold with him, but all three of them shack up at the Salvatore Boarding House, where Elena convinced Damon not to kill Zach, and just compel him to go away. Because morals.

Meanwhile, Damon went to go check up on the Bennetts, because now that he was back in Mystic Falls, he wanted to get Katherine out of that tomb. He revealed to Grams that Elena didn't die that night, and was a vampire, and that she needed a lapis lazuli if she'd be so kind. And he was turned away, and told that Grams needed to think about it before doing anything for Elena, but a frank 'no' to releasing the tomb vampires.

And that's where I'll be taking Elena from. She hasn't revealed her aliveness to Jeremy yet, or anyone aside from Grams.
